What is Groundhog Day

Groundhog day is an event in the US & Canada where nation’s most well known groundhog predict the end of winter.

The day is very near and in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, the most well known groundhog Punxsutawney Phil are preparing for this special day.

As per the tradition, if it’s a clear weather and groundhog can see his shadow, it means there are six more weeks of winter to go, otherwise there will be an early spring.

This is one of the largest celebrations, and it takes place at Gobbler’s Knob in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania every year where thousands of people come to celebrate. This celebration is completely free of cost to atend

When is Groundhog Day?

Groundhog Day is celebrated on Feb. 2 every year. The first official Groundhog Day was celebrated on February 2, 1887.

This is not a federal holiday, but still many Americans tune in to see if Punxsutawney Phil, sees his shadow every year on this day or not.

What happens if the groundhog sees its shadow?

If Phil sees his shadow, we should expect six more weeks of winters to go. Last year the groundhog predicted a longer winter.

It is said that it was a newspaper editor and groundhog hunter who declared Phil, a groundhog from Punxsutawney, the true predictor.

Unfortunately, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration says the groundhog has “no predictive skill.” He’s only gotten it right about 40% of the time.

“He is not a meteorologist and deserves better than to be exploited every year for tourism money,” PETA said in a statement.
